'Worse Than Chernobyl': When the Fukushima Meltdown Hits Groundwater

Fukushima is going to dwarf Chenobyl. The Japanese government has had a level 7 nuclear disaster going for almost a week but won’t admit it.

The disaster is occurring the opposite way than Chernobyl, which exploded and stopped the reaction. At Fukushima, the reactions are getting worse. I suspect three nuclear piles are in meltdown and we will probably get some of it.

If reactor 3 is in meltdown, the concrete under the containment looks like lava. But Fukushima is not far off the water table. When that molten mass of self-sustaining nuclear material gets to the water table it won’t simply cool down. It will explode – not a nuclear explosion, but probably enough to involve the rest of the reactors and fuel rods at the facility.

Pouring concrete on a critical reactor makes no sense – it will simply explode and release more radioactive particulate matter. The concrete will melt and the problem will get worse. Chernobyl was different – a critical reactor exploded and stopped the reaction. At Fukushima, the reactor cores are still melting down. The ONLY way to stop that is to detonate a ~10 kiloton fission device inside each reactor containment vessel and hope to vaporize the cores. That’s probably a bad solution.

A nuclear meltdown is a self-sustaining reaction. Nothing can stop it except stopping the reaction. And that would require a nuclear weapon. In fact, it would require one in each containment vessel to merely stop what is going on now. But it will be messy.

Fukushima was waiting to happen because of the placement of the emergency generators. If they had not all failed at once by being inundated by a tsunami, Fukushima would not have happened as it did – although it WOULD still have been a nuclear disaster. Every containment in the world is built to withstand a Magnitude 6.9 earthquake; the Japanese chose to ignore the fact that a similar earthquake had hit that same general area in 1896.

Anyway, here is the information that the US doesn’t seem to want released. And here is a chart that might help with perspective.

Making matters worse is the MOX in reactor 3. MOX is the street name for ‘mixed oxide fuel‘ which uses ~9% plutonium along with a uranium compound to fuel reactors. This is why it can be used.

The problem is that you don’t want to play with this stuff. A nuclear reactor means bring fissile material to a point at which it is hot enough to boil water (in a light-water reactor) and not enough to melt and go supercritical (China syndrome or a Chernobyl incident). You simply cannot let it get away from you because if it does, you can’t stop it.

The Japanese are still talking about days or weeks to clean this up. That’s not true. They cannot clean it up. And no one will live in that area again for dozens or maybe hundreds of years.

Americans Vastly Underestimate Wealth Inequality, Support 'More Equal Distribution Of Wealth': Study
When Americans were asked how much the top 20% should have, 92% said they'd rather live in a country with Sweden's wealth distribution.

Americans vastly underestimate the degree of wealth inequality in America, and we believe that the distribution should be far more equitable than it actually is, according to a new study.

Or, as the study's authors put it: "All demographic groups -- even those not usually associated with wealth redistribution such as Republicans and the wealthy -- desired a more equal distribution of wealth than the status quo."

The report (pdf) "Building a Better America -- One Wealth Quintile At A Time" by Dan Ariely of Duke University and Michael I. Norton of Harvard Business School (hat tip to Paul Kedrosky), shows that across ideological, economic and gender groups, Americans thought the richest 20 percent of our society controlled about 59 percent of the wealth, while the real number is closer to 84 percent.

More interesting than that, the report says, is that the respondents (a randomly selected 5,522-person sample, reflecting the country's ideological, economic and gender demographics, surveyed in December 2005) believed the top 20 percent should own only 32 percent of the wealth. Respondents with incomes over $100,000 per year had similar answers to those making less than $50,000. (The report has helpful, multi-colored charts.)
The respondents were presented with unlabeled pie charts representing the wealth distributions of the U.S., where the richest 20 percent controlled about 84 percent of wealth, and Sweden, where the top 20 percent only controlled 36 percent of wealth.

Without knowing which country they were picking, 92 percent of respondents said they'd rather live in a country with Sweden's wealth distribution.

As the new Forbes billionaires list, released Wednesday, testifies, the richest Americans are getting richer, even as the country as a whole gets poorer. After 2005 income inequality continued to balloon.

They Hate Us for Our Occupations

In 2004, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld commissioned a task force to study what causes Terrorism, and it concluded that "Muslims do not 'hate our freedom,' but rather, they hate our policies": specifically, "American direct intervention in the Muslim world" through our "one sided support in favor of Israel"; support for Islamic tyrannies in places like Egypt and Saudi Arabia; and, most of all, "the American occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan" (the full report is here). Now, a new, comprehensive study from Robert Pape, a University of Chicago political science professor and former Air Force lecturer, substantiates what is (a) already bleedingly obvious and (b) known to the U.S. Government for many years: namely, that the prime cause of suicide bombings is not Hatred of Our Freedoms or Inherent Violence in Islamic Culture or a Desire for Worldwide Sharia Rule by Caliphate, but rather... foreign military occupations. As summarized by Politico's Laura Rozen:

Pape. . . will present findings on Capitol Hill Tuesday that argue that the majority of suicide terrorism around the world since 1980 has had a common cause: military occupation.
Pape and his team of researchers draw on data produced by a six-year study of suicide terrorist attacks around the world that was partially funded by the Defense Department's Defense Threat Reduction Agency. They have compiled the terrorism statistics in a publicly available database comprised of some 10,000 records on some 2,200 suicide terrorism attacks, dating back to the first suicide terrorism attack of modern times - the 1983 truck bombing of the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, that killed 241 U.S. Marines.
"We have lots of evidence now that when you put the foreign military presence in, it triggers suicide terrorism campaigns, ... and that when the foreign forces leave, it takes away almost 100% of the terrorist campaign," Pape said in an interview last week on his findings.
Pape said there has been a dramatic spike in suicide bombings in Afghanistan since U.S. forces began to expand their presence to the south and east of the country in 2006. . . . Deaths due to suicide attacks in Afghanistan have gone up by a third in the year since President Obama added another 30,000 U.S. troops. "It is not making it any better," Pape said.
Pape believes his findings have important implications even for countries where the U.S. does not have a significant direct military presence, but is perceived by the population to be indirectly occupying.
For instance, across the border from Afghanistan, suicide terrorism exploded in Pakistan in 2006 as the U.S. put pressure on then Pakistani President Gen. Pervez Musharraf "to divert 100,000 Pakistani army troops from their [perceived] main threat [India] to western Pakistan," Pape said.

Imagine that. Isn't Muslim culture just so bizarre, primitive, and inscrutable? As strange as it is, they actually seem to dislike it when foreign militaries bomb, invade and occupy their countries, and Western powers interfere in their internal affairs by overthrowing and covertly manipulating their governments, imposing sanctions that kill hundreds of thousands of Muslim children, and arming their enemies. Therefore (of course), the solution to Terrorism is to interfere more in their countries by continuing to occupy, bomb, invade, assassinate, lawlessly imprison and control them, because that's the only way we can Stay Safe. There are people over there who are angry at us for what we're doing in their world, so we need to do much more of it to eradicate the anger. That's the core logic of the War on Terror. How is that working out ?

Akbar Ahmed, the Chair of Islamic Studies at American University, was on Bloggingheads TV yesterday with Robert Wright discussing convicted attempted Times Square bomber Faisal Shahzad, and said this:

Take the case of Faisal Shahzad. He seems to be, if you put him in a category . . . he grows up with the reputation of being a party guy, a party boy in the tribal areas [in Pakistan]. . . . He then comes to America and all the pictures are of a modern young man. . . . He changes, but he changes, again, for interesting reasons. The media would have us believe that it's the violence in the Koran and the religion of Islam. But hear what he's saying. He's in fact saying: I am taking revenge for the drone strikes in the tribal areas. So he's acting more like a tribesman whose involvement in Pashtun values . . . one of the primary features of that is revenge, rather then saying I'm going to have a jihad or I've been trained by literalists . . . .

That is confirmed by mountains of evidence not only about what motivated Shahzad but most anti-American Terrorists as well: severe anger over the violence and interference the U.S. brings to their part of the world. The only caveat I'd add to Professor Ahmed's remarks is that a desire to exact vengeance for foreign killings on your soil is hardly a unique attribute of Pashtun culture. It's fairly universal. See, for instance, the furious American response to the one-day attack on 9/11 -- still going strong even after 9 years. As Professor Pape documents: "when you put the foreign military presence in, it triggers suicide terrorism campaigns... and that when the foreign forces leave, it takes away almost 100% of the terrorist campaign." It hardly takes a genius to figure out the most effective way of reducing anti-American Terrorism; the only question is whether that's the actual goal of those in power.

For You Conservatives and Libertarians: The Fake Republican 'Controversy" over the Ground Zero Mosque

Republicans/conservatives have been ramping up their lies, racism, and paranoia as the mid-term elections draw near in a couple of months to try and get their base Republican, Tea Party and Libertarian voters upset enough to show up at the polls and vote. The reason? They hope to unseat the Democratic majority in the House and Senate so they can give more tax breaks to the ultra-rich, wage more war, deregulate things even more so corporations can pollute, destroy the economy and treat their workers unfairly, etc. Yeah, that actually is their agenda if you look at their policy.

The controversy over the mosque is fake, it's manufactured by conservative politicians to scare you, to make you vote against your own best interests, as usual. It is designed to simply scare you enough to get you to the polls on election day where you will support the Tea Party, Libertarian or Republican candidates, who will do corporate America's bidding; resulting in higher prices, more war, more pollution, more global warming, more oil drilling, no more net neutrality, no regulation on industry that needs it, more lost jobs, an unstable and unhealthy economy, etc.

It's what the conservatives do in every election with gay marriage amendments, school prayer, and abortion, for example. They have no actual policy (aside from protecting the ultra-rich and corporations while destroying the middle class and poor) so they hide behind wedge issues to make the ignorant, the bigoted, the fundamentalists, and the fearful support their candidates. They are liars and con-men.

And you Libertarians, you are DELUSIONAL if you think you are not supporting this activity; Libertarians like Ron Paul and his son Rand are total corporate whores (who don't even believe in evolution, by the way)! Their voting record is clear and the results of their policy stances are proven destructive to your life, your rights, your environment, your wallet, and your country. This insanity must END. People need to stop supporting these crazy greedy ignorant conservatives and Libertarians who are actually out to fleece you and fool you into believing "government is evil". YOU are the government, government is not evil at all.

Government has been abused and manipulated by corporate interests with the help of corrupt elected officials. So control your government and start electing people who are NOT nuts, liars or con-men! Stop allowing yourself to be used and lied to. Stop supporting conservative candidates. Their only goal is to enrich the already rich... at any cost.

There are existing mosques all over NYC, including some just blocks away from the WTC site, there is even one inside the Pentagon (which was attacked on 9/11), and they are all over the USA. Also, the First Amendment to the US Constitution assures freedom of religion, but the Republicans and Libertarians and Tea Partiers, who claim to LOVE the constitution, have been trying to repeal portions of it (all due to their racism and desire to inspire fear in their voting base)!

Where was the "outrage" and calls to ban Christian churches after the 1996 bombing at the Olympic games by Christian conservative Eric Rudolph? Or after the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma by Christian fascists, where many died? Where was the outrage when, in 1990, I could have been killed by a bomb that would have leveled two city blocks when my old work place (a large office building in west Los Angeles) was attacked by Dean Harvey Hicks, a similar right wing fanatic, simply because an IRS office was in the same building? (I did not work for the IRS, I worked for a company that raised money for progressive causes, and luckily his bomb malfunctioned and was rendered harmless in time).

As Keith Olbermann illustrates below, the majority of terrorism involving Muslims in the USA are cases where it's the Muslims who are attacked.

We are not at war with Islam. This was a goal of Osama bin Laden, to try and start a religious war between Christians and Muslims, and the conservatives (the Republicans, Tea Partiers and Libertarians - all of whom are against this mosque) are playing right into bin Laden's hands. It's no secret that right-wing policy created the Taliban and created al Qaeda in their war against the Soviets years ago (we actually funded them). It's no secret that the 9/11 attacks were a response to conservative policy, mixed with fundamentalist insanity, and it's no secret that our continued presence in Iraq, Afghanistan and expanding wars into other Muslim nations is only triggering more anti-American sentiment (because we keep killing large numbers of civilians), thus more war. All of these facts are ADMITTED to by our government, so you disbelievers- don't bother trying to deny it.

Now the conservatives are making matters worse by making a big fake controversy over a Muslim community center, basketball court, and culinary school, giving the Muslim world the impression that, indeed, we are at war with Islam. Nice going you nut bags. The next time someone blows up a building or plane in the USA we'll know who to blame.
